There is so much to love about Love’s Ice Cream and Chocolate. Located inside the Downtown Market, Love’s founder Chris McKellar produces small-batch ice cream made with quality ingredients – and you can truly taste the difference. In a city with some amazing contenders, we think Love’s makes the best ice cream we’ve ever had, vegan or not! Almost everything is made in-house, with a commitment to sourcing as many ingredients from local, healthy, and organic sources as often as possible. It’s a core concept at Love’s and a key to the success.
One of our favorite gelato flavors is Cinnamon Roasted Nut. Since they couldn’t find a healthy and ethical source of non-dairy milk, it’s made with a mixture of cashew and almond milk that they make. It’s really unique and delicious. Other flavors we’ve tried have all been just as good. We’ve had a Coconut Chip gelato and Watermelon sorbet, but one more standout – and is a favorite of many – is the Rosewater Cardamom gelato. There are so many vegan flavors to choose from and they’re on rotation so every visit is a nice surprise to order the classics or try something new.
You can buy by the scoop, but they also sell pints to go. You’ll pay extra at Love’s, but it’s for the quality, and we think it’s absolutely worth it. Love’s is also known for it’s Mitten Pops. These are chocolate covered ice cream popsicles shaped like the Michigan Mitten, and there’s always a vegan version.
Love’s has a liquor license and a bar where you can enjoy a pint of beer, or choose from a selection of ice cream-based boozy cocktails.
December 2018, Love’s launched it’s latest venture, small batch, handcrafted chocolate. A big glass case full of bonbons, chocolate covered nuts, candy bars, and other confections is now part of the Love’s space at the Downtown Market. Vegan items are very clearly marked.
At the chocolate counter, you can select from several choices of beautiful confections including bonbons and candy bars. Another decadent treat, and just as with the gelato, they are made from the best ingredients. This makes the cost more than you might think a chocolate should cost, but they are worth it.
Love’s also has a truck and hand cart for catering events.
