As we’ve said before, Indian food is one of our favorites. Vegetarian is easy, but it can be hard to find restaurants with a solid amount of vegan options – dishes are usually filled with ghee (clarified butter). We’ve accepted this sad situation and usually just cook Indian at home. India Town is a great choice though, and you can forget about cooking at home – let Tony do it for you! Located on Division, just south of 36th Ave, it’s easy to miss but worth the effort to find.
When we sat down we were immediately greeted by the very pleasant owner Tony who is incredibly welcoming. We told him that we were vegan, and he quickly pointed out that every vegan dish is clearly marked on the menu, so there’s no guesswork. And there are twelve (12!!)vegan dishes. Pretty much every Indian curry you’d ever think to order, you can.
Our favorites include Aloo Mutter (peas and potatoes), the Eggplant Bharta and the Vegetable Jalfrezi. Each comes with rice, and we also ordered roti without ghee. You can order a mango shake with almond milk, and even vegan chai. Pretty rare.
While we waited for our food, we popped into the shop next door. The connected space is full of Indian groceries, clothes, movies, and music. The grocery section probably isn’t the best in GR (that title goes to Spice of India on 28th), but there are more than enough staples that make it a worthy stop for your home cooking needs. The prices are also very competitive.
Wait times can be a bit of an issue. However, the food is worth the wait.
Jon is very picky about Indian food. He’s worked with an Indian wildlife organization and has been to India twice. That sets the food bar pretty high. India Town is not the best Indian food he’s ever had, but he’ll tell you it’s the best of the bunch in Grand Rapids. Check it out for yourself and see if you agree.
India Town is absolutely worth a stop. The food is flavorful, plentiful and the prices are right.
There are no alcoholic beverages for purchase but as with some other local restaurants, you can BYOB. They also deliver through Uber Eats, Seamless and Grubhub.
