Gursha is one of three Ethiopian restaurants in Grand Rapids along with Gojo and Little Africa (our favorite). Located on Kalamazoo near 44th Street, Gursha can be found in a strip mall near Mediterranean Island International Foods, a great ethnic grocery store which also happens to be the best place to buy the Ethiopian bread, injera, and other food specialty items.
Gursha’s evolved since they opened, from a very stripped down joint to a really cute place that celebrates the Ethiopian culture. The service is good and the food comes out fast.
There are a few vegetarian dishes on the menu and all of them are vegan. The best bang for your buck is the “Vege Combo” for $9.99 per person. This will get each you five different dishes to try with stacks of injera.
We had all the usual – atakilt wat (cabbage, potatoes and carrots), kik alicha (yellow split peas), gomen wat (spinach), ye’abesha gomen (collard greens), and mesir wat (spicy red lentils).
If you’re a fan of Ethiopian, you definitely need to stop in to Gursha and check it out. People who have been to Ethiopia say it’s the best in the city. Where it ranks among the Grand Rapids three, we’ll let you decide.
