Kingfisher Restaurant and Deli took over a location near and dear to many hearts in the city, 1001 Lake Drive SE, the Center of the Universe, Marie Catrib’s. Marie’s closed it’s doors in the fall of 2018 and many of us have been eagerly anticipating what the new owners would do with the place.
The owners of Kingfisher are no strangers to the Restaurant biz. They also own Little Bird and The Early Bird. From the beginning, they recognized they had big shoes to fill and have created a unique restaurant setting. Is it Marie’s? No. It’s not even close. But who could even try to fill that void?
What they have created is a dining experience with an eclectic menu of European inspired dishes. They promised early on that they would be vegan-friendly, and they’ve delivered. Kingfisher has a pretty substantial vegan menu.
Since they serve breakfast all day, they’ve included a savory tofu scramble dish complete with greens, toast, and potatoes. Unfortunately, there is no vegan butter available, so jam will be your only toast option. They also offer a grain porridge made from overnight oats, quinoa, barley, granola, and peanut butter that you can top off with almond milk and dried or fresh fruit. You’ll also find a trendy toast section on the menu offer avocado, hummus, or eggplant caponata toast. There’s also a braised greens and chickpea bowl, mushroom and zucchini socca, and a beet and grapefruit salad.
The deli isn’t open yet, but they say it’s coming. When it does, we’ll be among the first to stop in and see what the offerings are.
