Of all the questions we receive at Vegan Grand Rapids, hands down we’re most often asked where to eat breakfast. Yes, vegan breakfast options exist in Grand Rapids, some pretty good ones. But for that classic diner-style, hashbrown, tofu scramble, toast, coffee – you know, the breakfast spread. As a vegan in Grand Rapids, you’ve been making that at home.
Anna’s House, a locally owned (and born) restaurant that now has locations across the state, offered vegan options for a long time. But it’s now at another level.
The separate vegan menu has everything from spicy to sweet, healthy to indulgent. Waffles, pancakes, quinoa bowls, scrambles, burritos, and hash are packed with some of the “best of the best” vegan products available today.
You’ll see the Just Egg featured prominently in many of the dishes, and those that don’t have it you have the option to add for an extra charge. The Impossible Foods product is also offered sausage-style.
It’s hard to say what the best options are. If you’re looking for healthy both the chocolate quinoa bowl and baked oatmeal are great (they also offer freshly pressed juices). For the heartier stuff, we really like the vegan scramble – it’s Just Egg cooked up with tons of veggies and mushrooms. Going to sweet, the waffles are good, but they’re almost laughably small for $9.25. It’s worth noting that overall this is not a breakfast spot for a tight budget. It’s not off the charts expensive, but just a heads up. It makes sense. Products like Just Egg are expensive so naturally, the cost is passed to you.
The one thing missing is vegan butter. So your toast will be jam only, and the waffle and pancakes are syrup only. Not a deal breaker… but if you are like us and want buttered toast with your breakfast, pack your own Earth Balance.
They’ve also got decent lunch options, which include the Impossible Burger.
There are seven locations, two in Grand Rapids (Beltline and Plainfield). With Anna’s House clear goal for aggressive growth, this is one locally-owned chain we can really get behind to spread far and wide.
