Field & Fire Cafe
What do you do when you have an already established and successful bakery? If you’re Field & Fire you open a cafe!
Field & Fire’s bakery has been a hit in Grand Rapids. As we mentioned in our review of their bakery, they offer real deal European-style, old-world loaves and pastries. So it should be no surprise that the Field & Fire Café is another excellent place when it comes to quality – and the vegan options are pretty good.
The cafe offers muffins similar to what’s available at the bakery – chocolate (also GF), pumpkin/ginger, and pear/cardamom. Beyond that for breakfast, there’s a vegan apple cinnamon oatmeal (also GF), and the best offering by far – the hot mess “skillet.” Potatoes, red bell pepper, onion and spinach with (awesome and local) Nutcase Vegan Meats breakfast sausage, topped with avocado and cashew cream. Two hot options, but the menu is small – and we think both are good enough to warrant a visit. They also serve delicious Madcap Coffee and have non-dairy milk options.
For lunch, you can’t order anything other than the vegan Rueben. Corned tempeh, beet and ginger sauerkraut, Russian dressing on a Russian-style rye bread. But if you’re not into that (hard to imagine), you can opt for French lentil or carrot puree soups. Avocado toast, or a couple of salads if you want to keep it light – the Buddha bowl the standout there.
The café interior is beautiful, and while the menu isn’t extensive, Field & Fire Café does do what they do well.
Owners Shelby and Julie have been quoted in the press as saying they’d like to open a third business. We hope they do!
