Unquestionably the best feature of Linear is the location. Sure, it’s conveniently located on Monroe along with other vegan-friendly joints, but Linear is on the west side of Monroe, meaning great river views. Linear has taken advantage of that and offers an awesome patio. Not so helpful in the winter, but warmer months, Linear will be one of the best spots in the city.
On the food front, Linear’s menu features dishes that are locally sourced with seasonal ingredients.
Linear’s hovering on the edge for a spot on the guide. It’s the kind of place that five years ago we’d be falling over ourselves to get in there. But these days, the competition is much tougher. They do offer at least one vegan option on every section of the menu, but we know how that goes. If the one dish isn’t so great, you’re just stuck with what you have. And we’ve had great things and some not-so-great things.
The menu often does have other vegan options that won’t be labeled as such. An appetizer that can be veganized by removing an element. But you guys have heard this before. Remove that element to make it vegan has that dish falling short. Remove the cheese, the fat and salt the cheese brought to the dish is also gone. Those options won’t be labeled vegan, so ask your server, but be warned – we’ve found server knowledge on the vegan front to be hit or miss, so it’s worth double checking anything by asking more than once if need be.
By and large, we’ve enjoyed the food and the experience. Linear’s decor is beautiful and they have art from local artists. They have a great beer, wine and liquor list – and some unique and tasty specialty cocktails.
And don’t forget the patio and that view of the river.
